A Review by Jan Williams
“Tennessee & Kentucky Gardener’s Guide”
by Judy Lowe
Another book by Judy Lowe that I recently checked out of the Humphreys County Library is titled “Tennessee & Kentucky Gardener’s Guide”. If you read my previous review of the Month by Month Gardening in Tennessee & Kentucky it gives you a brief biography of Judy Lowe, and a much more complete one is contained in each of these books. As stated before in my previous review, she is very knowledgeable about gardening in Tennessee, having experienced gardening in several different sections of the state.
This book has 186 individual plant selections that are suited to Tennessee, with large full color photo of each plant in an easy to use format. with specific advice on planting and care, and information on added benefits such as attracting butterflies, bees and birds. There are chapters on gardening basics, shade gardening, a section titled “What’s in a Name” that may help with pronunciation of some of those less familiar names as well as identifying plant species. This is an excellent read for both the beginner as well as the experienced gardener, and especially helpful to new residents of Tennessee. It seems I always pick up some new nugget of helpful information no matter how many different gardening books I read.
My go-to source for books like this is used book seller Thrift books.com. For instance, the Month By Month Gardening in Tennessee & Kentucky is $3.79, and the Tennessee & Kentucky Gardener’s Guide is $3.99. They also have other books by Judy Lowe as well. Shipping is free on orders over $10.00 and shipping is fast, and everything I have received from them has been in the condition described, they have all been quite satisfactory. They also have new books for nearly 50 percent off the retail price.
